Position Purpose
To provide high quality animal management services
through compassion, education and enforcement, and to
yield protection and safety for Arvada citizens and the
animals that live therein.
JOB KNOWLEDGE - Essential Functions, Knowledge, Skills
and Abilities
1. Enforce Laws / Animal Care and Control
a. Knowledge and enforcement of laws and regulations
governing the licensing, quarantine, impoundment and
control of treatment/control of animals.
b. Responds to calls/complaints for service
regarding stray, vicious, injured, sick, nuisance
and dead animals, including capturing, controlling
or confining domestic pets, livestock and wild
animals
c. Knowledge with animal handling and of health,
behavior, breeds.
d. Investigates violations of animal ordinances,
collects evidence, issues citations, conducts
necessary follow-up, prepares cases and testifies in
court.
e. Provides on-going patrol for all areas of the
city and initiate activity when violations are
observed.
f. Multi-tasks and set priorities.
g. Exercise initiative and judgment as well as make
decisions and problem solves in a variety of
situations.
h. Demonstrate a high level of ethics, integrity,
and confidentiality.
2. Communications
a. Excellent written skills.
b. Good interpersonal skills.
c. Clearly and concisely transmits on police radio
and follows proper radio procedure.
d. Capable of working alone and in a team
environment.
3. Administrative Duties
a. Strong computer and typing skills for data entry,
reports, time sheets, and e-mails.
b. Retrieves and responds to a high volume of phone
calls from citizens on animal related
questions/concerns.
c. Prepare monthly statistical reports for general
patrol and park enforcement activity.
d. Documents calls for service requiring reports or
other written records (i.e. search warrants, etc).
e. General office duties such as filing and copying.
4. Educate Public
a. Gives school and other community education
presentations
b. Educate owners and complainants about current
ordinances in effect and responsible pet ownership.
Other Functions
1. Operates a city vehicle (equipped to carry animals)
in normal and high profile situations.
2. Perform euthanasia as necessary using Schedule III
drugs and/or assists with euthanasia decisions.
3. Other duties as required.

Skills / Requirements

Minimum Education or Formal Training and Experience:
* High School Diploma or GED equivalency
* Human relations and interpersonal communication
skills as demonstrated with two (2) years
customer service experience in a high pressure
work environment required.
* At least one (1) year experience related to
Animal Management or an environment designated
for the treatment, care and placement of
animals.
* Associates degree preferred.
* Computer and typing proficiency.
* Valid Colorado Driver License.
Working Environment/Physical Activities:
* This position requires moderate to extensive
physical work. Heavy lifting, pushing or pulling
of objects up to 100 pounds occasionally and/or
50 pounds frequently.
* Exposure to adverse weather conditions, zoonotic
and occupational illnesses and injuries, traffic
hazards and psychological stress.
* This position is required to work shift work,
holidays, and on-call duty hours.
