Thanksgiving "helpings" from the Accounting and Business School

posted Monday, November 23, 2009 10:44 AM

For many individuals and families this Thanksgiving season, one has to really dig deep to find something they are thankful for. It can be a difficult and stressful time right now. But there is encouragement and hope on the economic horizon. And it is my hope that you can enjoy this Thanksgiving time to be with friends and other loved ones who have helped you along, giving you encouragement and hope. I would encourage you to look at the little blessings that you have received during your time of unemployment.

Perhaps it was the helpful worker at the Workforce Center that helped you to get your resume straightened out. Perhaps it was someone at the recent Jobing.com job fair who took the time to discuss how working for their company could become a reality. Or perhaps it was a school you are currently attending to get that additional education and training so that you can move into your next work situation as a more capable and qualified employee.

A lot of times people lack the self-confidence to do the job they are applying to do. And the employer picks up on that insecurity. But there are ways to gain that kind of self-confidence that you need to do your job well. One way is to show your employer on your resume that you are actually qualified to do the job you are doing. Getting additional training, certifications, and education is the perfect way to show your employer that you can do the job you want to do.

I would invite you to consider the Accounting and Business School of the Rockies as your next step to gain that self-confidence and training you need to show an employer you are capable of doing the job. We offer three to five month Certificate programs in Professional Bookkeeping, Administrative Assistant, Office Manager, Customer Service/ Call Center, and Microsoft Power User. We also have some great specials going on right now. For example, you can receive a FREE resume/interview class with the purchase of any one or more class in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Office, Telecommunication, Office Procedures, or Customer Service. If you would like to learn more or set up a complimentary and personalized visit of the school, please contact Daniel Seatvet at 303-755-6885 or Daniel@ABSRschool.com. Thanks, we’ll see you soon!

Entrepreneurs Need the Right Tools to Succeed

posted Tuesday, September 8, 2009 10:41 AM

For many people when they experience a lay-off this can be a tumultuous time in their lives. Worry about their financial future arises, as does their self-confidence lower with each passing day, week, rejection, pass-up, etc. A time when a person is laid off can either be seen negatively, or it can be seen positively. Perhaps you are the type of person who views this time as a time of rejuvenation from the wariness that you have experienced prior. Perhaps it is a time of regrowth and retraining for new skills, and to finally find that thing “I want to do when I grow up”.

While these sorts of transitions into new careers and adventures can be scary, they can also be exhilarating. But whatever it is, it is not easy. Take a look at this recent article. To be sure, being your own boss and fulfilling your “entrepreneurial spirit” certainly has its rewards. But those rewards don’t come without a lot of hard work, determination, perseverance, and above all (I think) the ability to stay positive and optimistic in the face of uncertainty and overwhelming pressure. Easier said than done, for sure. But it’s not impossible.

What makes being your own boss possible? Well, among other things a great thing entrepreneurs can do is to gain the training that is necessary to start your own business--- and more so to keep your business going! Among other ways, the most well-known and accessible way for entrepreneurs to be entrepreneurs is to acquire the education in your chosen field. Luck happens, but do you really want to be lucky in business? Or do you want to be GOOD?! That’s a trick question, everyone wants to be GOOD at what they do.

A growing industry in today’s economy (and any economy) is bookkeeping. The beauty of being a self-employed bookkeeper is that there is always a client out there for you. The more people out there who own their own businesses, the more people out there that NEED a bookkeeper. With approximately 80% of businesses in Colorado falling into the category of “small business”, these businesses cannot afford to, or simply do not want to, hire a full-time bookkeeper. That’s where YOU come in. Having the education to be a bookkeeper allows you to set your own hours, work for who you want, and earn the kind of money that you want.

The Accounting and Business School of the Rockies can train you to become a bookkeeper. We train you to have the confidence that you desire to do your own, or someone else’s bookkeeping. At such an affordable price, you can go to school full-time or part-time, at school or at home, to get in, get out, and get on with your life in as little as three to five months. For more information about the Accounting and Business School of the Rockies and how you can fulfill your dream of being self-employed, contact us at http://www.ABSRschool.com or call in at 303-755-6885. We’ll see you soon!

Your Resume Should Say What You Want To Do

posted Friday, July 31, 2009 1:48 PM

Yesterday, I was at the Jobing.com job fair at the Colorado Convention Center. My colleague and I noticed a trend of people we talked to about a particularly bad habit that some people do when talking to a prospective employer. Are you in a situation where you have been doing one job or being in one industry for a substantial amount of time? Are you in a situation where you don’t want to do that job or be in that industry anymore? If this describes you, then I would recommend arranging your resume to not say what you have done, but what you want to do.

In other words, I think a lot of job-seekers will configure their resume to describe exactly what they have done and make it look like that is what they want to continue to do. There is nothing wrong with that, per se, with describing what you have job experience in. But the problem arises when your resume fits the description of your previous position so much that there is no room (in the eyes of the employer) to see you do anything else besides what you have been doing.

Do you have skills or interests or expertise in areas that you have not been doing at your current position? Perhaps there is something in your extra-curricular activities that you think would fit well for you what you want to do. All this is an effort to focus on what you want to do in the future, not necessarily describing what you have done in the past and making it look as though you are wanting to continue to do that, when in fact you don’t.

Changing industries and jobs can be very difficult for some people. You really have to think deep about what sort of skills and abilities you possess that can carry over to different industries and in fact can carry over to any industry. I think that if more job-seekers think deeper about the kinds of skills they possess that can branch out to different industries, that will make them, a) more marketable, and b) more able to look at a variety of different jobs in different industries instead of being restricted to just one type of job.

Have you ever considered the job change into Bookkeeping? Bookkeepers are always in demand, and they can find jobs in everything from large corporations to one-person operations and everything in between. Every company needs a Bookkeeper. Accounting and Business School of the Rockies can provide the training you need to become a Bookkeeper, along with any one of our four other Certificate programs including Administrative Assistant, Office Manager, Call Center/ Customer Service, and Microsoft Power User. If you are interested in learning more about Accounting and Business School of the Rockies, please visit http://www.ABSRschool.com or call 303-755-6885.

Using LinkedIn.com to Help with Education Search

posted Friday, July 24, 2009 1:40 PM

For many people before they commit to attending a school and follow through on completing an education program, they want to learn as much as they can about the school. One of the best ways to go about doing this is by asking alumni of the school questions about their experience. An alum will have been through the school before, and based on their own experience there, that can help to determine if that school is the right fit for you. They will be able to tell you what they liked about it, and what they didn’t like about it. By gauging your interaction with one or many alumni of a school you will be able to determine if you really want to devote the time, energy and finances to pursuing this goal.

A great way to get in contact with alumni of a particular school is to utilize networking web-sites such as LinkedIn.com. You can do a search under “Groups” for the school you are interested in attending. From there you will see an abundance of alumni that are a part of that group. It’s best if you already know someone in that school group, but if you do not you can try to become acquainted with them and ask their thoughts about the school.

Another great way to seek out alumni is to attend events that the school is putting on. Often times there are alumni there who would be more than happy to talk to you about the school and their experience there as a student. Accounting and Business School of the Rockies is having an Open House on Friday, July 31 st from 3:00pm to 6:00pm. You will have a chance to talk to staff, teachers and alumni about the school. If you would like to RSVP so we know you are coming, please contact Daniel Seatvet at Daniel@ABSRschool.com or 303-755-6885. Be sure to stop by our booth at the Jobing.com Career Fair at the Colorado Convention Center on Thursday, July 30 th as well. We’ll see you there!
