Blog Post: HR Manager Gives Job Seeker Tips
posted Wednesday, April 15, 2009 8:34 AM
For many job seekers the light at the end of the tunnel seems pretty dim. The unemployment rate hit 8.5% in March 2009 making the job market especially competitive.
In an effort to make your job search more bearable and hopefully productive here are some job search tips. 1. Networking: Companies are hiring but they are very cautious. Networking is your best way into a new position. Who you know can help you find your next job. 2. Online Job Searching: Use www.indeed.com and www.simplyhired.com, which are job board aggregators to find employment postings from across the Internet. This will cut your search time in half, if not more. 3. A+ Attitude: Maintain a positive outlook regardless of how long you have been looking for employment. A bad attitude is transparent and will affect your job search. 4. Relationships: Don’t burn bridges and if you have, mend them if possible. People have short memories and ultimately want to help. 5. Online Applications: Some companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), which are customizable. Take time to complete the entire questionnaire. 6. Hardcopy Application: Don’t be surprised if you are asked to complete a standard application on a brown clipboard in the lobby. Just part of their process. 7. Resume: Either hire someone to update your resume or ask an objective, knowledgeable friend to review your resume 8. Update: Renew, if needed, your LinkedIn profile, education, certification, and skill set To learn more about how to write an effective resume and receive resume service please contact the Maslin Group at http://www.resumes.maslingroup.com/ or call 888.833.8608 ext. 801.
