Blog Post: Setting and Meeting Goals in the Job Search

posted Friday, July 10, 2009 9:57 AM

Yesterday I attended an interesting Seminar where the speaker talked some about setting one’s goals, both professionally and personally. For many (if not most) people, setting goals in life is not on their list of high priority items. This is unfortunate because if you step back and think about it, what is the point of continuing on day after day if there is nothing to strive for? What is the point of staying in the job that you despise if you are not actively searching for a better fit? If you are a job-seeker, what is the point of filling out a few job applications each week if you keep getting rejected? Both of these scenarios are real and they are both difficult situations to overcome.

But that is where setting goals comes in. If you are employed, ask yourself: how much money or impact within my organization do I want to accomplish this year? If you are unemployed, ask yourself: how many jobs do I want to apply for this month, this week, and even this day? Setting goals for yourself in this respect can move yourself away from the fatalism of your tasks and on toward an optimism and joy about your day. “Today I will apply for five jobs!” “This week I will network with three new people!” It is this kind of goal setting that will benefit the job-seeker and move them toward a posture that is healthy for their overall employment rather than the drudgery that can easily ensue.

Once the goals are set, it is time for the goals to be met. Ask yourself: How will I achieve this goal? And also: Why do I want to achieve this goal? For many people who do set goals, they draw a blank as to the how and the why. Why do you want to make partner in your law firm in ten years? How will you go about retiring at the age of 50? Deciding what the goal is is the first part, and in many ways the easy part, to goal setting. What is perhaps more important is the way you go about accomplishing your goals. A good idea might be to set sub-goals within your overall goal structure. That will provide the opportunity for small wins as you work your way to your overall goal.

For a growing number of the workforce population, becoming a part-time or full-time bookkeeper is the goal. This lucrative career can provide supplemental or full-time respectable income. It is inexpensive with start-up costs and 90% of small businesses in Colorado have less than 20 employees --- all of which need a bookkeeper! This provides a fertile hiring landscape for inside the company itself or the bookkeeping work being outsourced to individuals like you. If your goal is to become a bookkeeper, with the why being to set your own hours, being your own boss, financial prosperity, or any number of reasons the last hurdle is the how. Accounting and Business School of the Rockies offers a Certificate in Professional Bookkeeping. Come get hands-on instruction from teachers who work in their field of expertise. With the abundant opportunities in bookkeeping today and in the years to come, possessing the skill of bookkeeping will always be an in-demand industry.
