Blog Post: 3 things to do if you just don't FEEL like marketing yourself
posted Friday, August 14, 2009 12:14 PM
You're good at what you do.
But it's just not enough... If you're a job seeker, you may have noticed that just being good at what you do isn't enough right now. You apply for a lot of jobs, but the doors remain closed and locked. The fact is that you HAVE to market yourself if you're on the outside looking in. Let me be clear: I'm not talking about fancy words or 'tooting your own horn' in ways that make you uncofrtable. I'm tallin about the consistent, persistent, purposeful, measurable application of the right methods to produce an intended result. Most job seekers know they should be doing more...they even know what to do...they just don't. Is that you? Have you thought about why? Is it a lack of confidence? Weariness with the whole thing? Disbelief that this is all happening to you (again in many cases)? Are you tired of having to prove yourself? Did you think that at this point your career would be as easy as your senior year in high school and you're depressed that it's not? That may be precisely what's keeping you from success. The reason many job seekers don't do more marketing is NOT because the tactics don't work, but because they don't believe those tactics will work for them...and it's the BELIEF, not the TACTICS that are at fault. A poor belief system makes their message weak, their credibility non-existent, and their work habits unproductive. What to do? 1. Sit down and think about WHY you're not eager to market...what specifically makes you uncomfortable or unwilling to put in the effort. 2. If you just don't like the tactics you're using (or you're frustrated because they don't work at all) then get some help - new tactics, or help using the current ones better. There are probably a dozen unique, proven ways to get work, and at least a few will be something you'll be able to do well. 3. If you're not marketing because you're stuck on some deeper issue (not sure you want to stay in the career, thinking about starting a business, or some other reason) then get some help to sort through that issue. When you get clarity, you'll be able to make the right moves. To do nothing will drain your bank account of money, and your heart of hope. If you need a recommendation on resources, shoot me a note.

You may want to add 'mind reader' to your resume, if you haven't already! Your comments on your blog rang so true as I found your blog this morning.
Just know that you have helped one person this early Sunday morning.
Thanks,
