What is the state of available elevation data? What quality and cost options do you have when planning to acquire up-to-date data? Currently, there is a patchwork of data available throughout the country that ranges from extremely old and inaccurate to quite recent and precise. How do you determine what data is fit for purpose and how much to spend? While 6 cm terrain data may be fit for San Francisco – it may not be fit for rural parts of Wyoming. Likewise, the degree of accuracy required for planning a traffic corridor may be considerably less than is necessary for a region prone to flooding.
The IFSAR data collection process wasn’t developed to satisfy everyone’s mapping needs. However, depending on the scope and requirements of a particular project, not only is IFSAR a proven alternative to LiDAR, but IFSAR’s ability to quickly complement a LiDAR end product with adequately precise, less-expensive elevation data and geometries can save users considerable time and money.
