Job: Traffic Signal Technician

Skilled and technical work in the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signal systems. May supervise and direct some seasonal workers within the traffic signal section. This position requires a variety of specialized tasks including, but not limited to, setting up signal controllers, time clocks, microwave detectors, emergency vehicle detectors, setting mast arms, span wire and pedestrian poles and other traffic signal equipment. This employee reports directly to the Traffic Signal Supervisor. Once trained, may have emergency on-call duty.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:
• 1-3 years traffic related experience desired.
• Knowledge of electronics (including repair) desired.
• IMSA Level I certification in traffic signals, traffic signs, markings & or ability to obtain certification within one year is required. Level II preferred
• Traffic Control Supervisor certification or ability to obtain within six months.
• Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) is required within one year.
• Valid Drivers License and a good driving record.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- ability to:

• maintain an effective working relationship with others.
• troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions in all traffic signal devices.
• use standard hand and power tools including saws, shovels, wrenches, blowers, and spray degreasers.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
• Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
• Must be able to work at heights over 15 feet.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 75 pounds.
• Must have the ability to distinguish the full range of the color spectrum
• Kneel/stand repetitively for up to 1 ½ hours per location, up to 5 locations per day
• Lift/carry cones (5 per lift to carry at shoulder weighing 60 lb.) up to 100 ft. to direct traffic from intersection work zones
• Lift/carry tool bag (35 lb.) 1-handed from truck to work area up to 100 ft., using step 28” above ground
• Climb into bucket on bucket truck and secure person in harnesses for above-groundwork (up to 3 times/day up/down and in/out of bucket) for up to 5 hours/day to install radios, check signs, change lights on signal head, maintain cameras
• Lift signal heads weighing up to 60 lb. (5-head) to 53” to position/replace
• Hitch/unhitch air compressor trailer to/from bucket truck
• Pull wires forcefully from pull boxes across intersection during construction
• Climb ladders to access/replace/remove ped heads (20 lb.) at 53”
• Lift/carry empty pull boxes (72 lb.) to install during construction/repair underground
