OVERALL JOB OBJECTIVE:
Under direct supervision of Foreman or Crew Leader, perform a variety of entry-level to semi-skilled street maintenance tasks and perform related duties as required. Our employees act with a high level of integrity, and take responsibility for their words and actions. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Assists in maintaining public streets and right-of-ways. This may include minor and major street, curb and gutter and sidewalk repair such as patching and pothole repairs, overlaying, grading, chipseal and other resurfacing work and debris, trash, vegetation and tree-limb removal. 2. Uses tools and equipment in the performance of maintenance and repair tasks. Will perform operator maintenance, inspection and repairs on equipment. 3. Responds to snow shifts when called from mid-September through mid-April is a requirement of this position. Works irregular hours, weekends, evening, holidays and/or emergencies as required to respond to Public Works maintenance needs. May be required to perform standby duties. 4. Maintains accurate written records of work performed and materials and equipment used. May use a computer to log information. 5. Facilitates good communication with coworkers and supervisors. This includes sharing information and receiving feedback, listening to and respecting input, participating in work group conversations and directly dealing with issues that arise. Maintains effective working relationships. 6. Participates as a member of a team. Treats coworkers and supervisors with respect and courtesy. Contributes and gives input to the team. Recognizes the needs of team members and maintains a fair share of the team’s workload. 7. Performs miscellaneous functions including removing various objects that have been abandoned on city streets and right-of-ways. 8. Remains generally alert to conditions and events occurring on public right-of-ways indicating anticipated or needed repairs. 9. May supervise seasonal or temporary employees, including task assignment and work instruction. 10. May assist in maintaining medians and bikeways. This includes mowing, trash and snow removal, aerating, fertilizing and sweeping. May assist in maintaining utilities systems. 11. Other: • Performs related duties as required to meet the needs of the city. • Takes proper safety precautions to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures. Reports all accidents and damage to city property. • Establishes Temporary Traffic Control Work zones. • Responsible for knowing and complying with all city and department policies; participating in professional trainings and development; and adhering to attendance and workplace attire policies. REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or equivalent. A minimum of one year experience in street maintenance or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Ability to operate and perform minor maintenance on a variety of heavy equipment. Variety of street maintenance experience, including patching and pothole repair, chipseal, overlay and snow removal. Effective communication skills. Ability to work tactfully and effectively with the public. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to perform a wide range of strenuous physical and manual tasks in an outdoor environment. Physical ability to stand, walk and kneel. Able to use a variety of long handled, manual and power tools; and to operate equipment while working in and around moving traffic. Upper body strength to lift up to 65 pounds on a daily basis and over 100 pounds on an occasional basis. Ability to obtain certification for backhoe and loader under the Equipment Operator's Certification and Training program within one year of hire. Valid Colorado driver's License. Have and maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record. Within six months of hire obtain Colorado Group B Commercial Driver's license without L (airbrake) restrictions; and ATSSA or equivalent certification as a traffic flagger. Willingness and ability to work irregular hours, weekends, evenings, holidays, and/or emergencies; and to respond to snow shifts when called from mid-September through mid-April. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS – In addition to the required minimum qualifications: A minimum of two years of experience in asphalt, construction or other related work. Certified Traffic Control Supervisor.
