Job Summary
AECOM’s Water Business Unit is actively seeking a highly talented and motivated Mid-Level Hydrologic & Hydraulic Engineer for immediate employment in the Greenwood Village, Colorado office to support an array of water resources projects including floodplain mapping and surface water modeling. AECOM is searching for enthusiastic candidates that are client focused, impactful, decisive and have the ability to serve as a role model. The position will involve working on projects for local municipalities, federal agencies, and private clients to conduct hydrologic & hydraulic modeling.

Much of the work will involve modeling, mapping, and data analysis that will result in producing new flood insurance rate maps and conducting flood risk assessments for FEMA. AECOM is nationally recognized for our floodplain mapping capabilities and is trailblazing new technologies and methodologies to advance big data in our high-tech culture. We use custom-built tools for complex analysis of tens of thousands of hydraulic simulations, run risk-based tools in the cloud, and create innovative visualization techniques to communicate results.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
• Performing and/or directing hydrologic and hydraulic surface water modeling with various programs (e.g., HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS)
• Potential for programming scripts and tools for risk assessment, H&H analysis, mapping, and cloud computing
• Managing tasks of varying complexity, including delegating work, advising others on approach and processes, and overseeing/reviewing the work of others.
• Work with a team of hydraulic modeling professionals to manage technical tasks, complete quality assurance/quality control reviews, and prepare high quality work products including documentation of model development, calibration, results, and reports, including the application of engineering judgement.
• Directing and reviewing documentation of calculations and H&H models
• Preparing engineering reports
• Evaluate, map, and process data in ArcGIS
• Presenting information to clients, communities, and/or the public at virtual and in-person meetings
• Deputy project manager and assisting in proposal writing and business development activities

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering with an emphasis in water resources, hydrology, hydraulic engineering, or other related field required
  • 3+ years of experience in surface water modeling and/or design
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) with plans of obtaining Professional Engineer
  • Exhibits in-depth knowledge of surface water modeling and familiarity with floodplain management
  • Demonstrated familiarity with hydrologic and hydraulic modeling software (e.g. HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS), and data analysis/mapping software (e.g. ArcMap)
  • Demonstrated ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams
  • Strong understanding of hydrology and hydraulics
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ownership and accountability for quality deliverables
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, as well as exceptional organizational skills
  • Ability to be flexible and have self-initiative
  • Proficient in spreadsheet, word processing and standard office software
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Professional Engineer ( in Colorado or seeking reciprocity)
  • 5+ years of experience in surface water modeling and/or design
  • Business development experience including client relations and proposal preparation
  • Experience in statistical hydrology
  • Proficient in 2D hydraulic modeling and experience with 2D BLE and reviewing hydraulics models
  • Proficiency with coding languages (e.g., R, python, VBA) and a design to learn/develop them
  • Experience with cloud-based technologies
  • Ability to communicate the technical aspects of projects to a wide audience
