POSITION SUMMARY
Participates in the accomplishment of Boulder Community Hospital’s and the Family Birth Center’s mission, vision and goals by utilizing the nursing process to coordinate and provide direct patient care.  Is accountable for coordinating the resources needed by patients and families, promotes patient satisfaction and facilitates the achievement of quality clinical and cost outcomes.  Ages of patients served include neonates, adolescents, and adults.  Interacts in a respectful manner, considerate of age and physical abilities, and provides assistance to individuals in a manner that takes into account their special needs or age related needs.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education And Formal Training
Special Qualifcations (Licensure, Registration, Etc.)
1.      Colorado RN license in good standing.
2.      BLS certification required by end of conditional period.
3.      NRP required by end of conditional period.

Knowledge, Skill And Ability
The RN will possess current knowledge and skills in the nursing care that includes theory base in anatomy and physiology, educational information and psychosocial information to respond to the needs of the patients and their families.
1.      Completion of competency based orientation program specific to the care areas hired for.
2.      Provides direct total patient care for specific group of patients with collaboration as needed.
3.      Demonstration of continuum of clinical proficiency.
4.      Demonstration of use of nursing process and care pathways or plans
5.      Physical and mental stamina to perform job duties.

Experience
Preferred six months to one-year RN clinical nursing experience in intensive care nursery, perinatal, ICU, or emergency department.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
ASSESSMENT
1.   The RN is responsible for the assessment of the patients and their families' biopsychosocial, and spiritual needs to meet their self-care, educational, environmental, safety and discharge goals.
2.      The RN is accountable for the assessment of the ancillary staff competencies and appropriateness of delegation for data collection for the above factors.
PLANNING
1.      The RN develops and prioritizes care of the patient and family based on the ongoing assessment and use of the individualized care plan in collaboration with the patient and health care team.
2.      The RN efficiently utilizes available resources including appropriate referrals to follow through on the plan of care.
IMPLEMENTATION
1.   The RN ensures completion of the interventions and appropriate patient education by demonstrating clinical knowledge for standard therapies as outlined in care guidelines for their areas of training and cross training.
a.      Labor/Delivery/Recovery and high risk antepartum, intrapartum patients and postpartum patients.
b.      Mother-Baby, low risk antepartum, postpartum, and well newborns.
c.      Transitional care of newborn.
d.      Care of the high risk newborn in Special Care Nursery.
2.      The RN ensures that the patient and family members will be involved in decision-making.
3.      The RN will delegate tasks/functions to competent care givers.
4.      May be required to perform point of care testing.  May be a point of care trainer.
 

EVALUATION
1.      The RN is accountable for ongoing coordination, evaluation and revision of the patients' plan of care, utilizing feedback from the patient/family and the health care team.
2.      The RN is responsible for the ongoing evaluation of ancillary staff competencies.
 

COMMUNICATION AND ACCOUNTABILITY
1.      Participates in unit/section problem solving and improvement of systems.
2.      Clearly documents all pertinent aspects of patient care in the medical record.
3.      Complete annual competencies as required.
4.      It is the expectation that all care providers document accurately and in real time, utilizing the electronic medical record within their department.
5.      Employees are expected to comply with all regulatory requirements, including Joint Commission Standards.
6.      Is familiar with organization, department and job specific Environment of Care areas, including Life Safety, Utilities Management, Hazardous Materials Communications, Emergency Preparedness, Infection Control and Medical Equipment Failure.
7.      Adheres to Standard Precautions as appropriate, which may include:
a.      the use of protective barriers, as appropriate (e.g., gloves, masks, gowns, pocket masks, and/or safety glasses);
b.      handling and disposing of infectious waste appropriately; and
c.      hand washing as appropriate.

OTHER DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
1.      Utilizes effective time management skills.
2.      Maintains professional appearance and FAMILY BIRTH CENTER dress code.
3.      Complies with FAMILY BIRTH CENTER guidelines for absence or tardiness.
4.      Keeps updated on information pertinent to the job by attending staff meetings, reading electronic mail, and reading information posted elsewhere for employees.
5.      Attends all Joint Commission/section required in-services.
6.      All employees are expected to remain flexible to meet the needs of the hospital, which may include floating to other departments to assist as the patient needs fluctuate.
 

MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED
Standard medical/hospital equipment: (i.e. hospital beds, wheelchairs and carts, IV infusion pumps, monitoring equipment, phone and intercom systems, computers, etc.) and unit specific equipment (see Competency Based Orientation)

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES
1.      Physical working environment may include, but not be limited to, any of the following hazards:  chemical, electrical, mechanical, biowaste, explosive, radiation, etc.
2.      Environmental conditions may include, but not be limited to, variations in temperature, noise, odors, etc.
3.      While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to constantly stand and walk. The employee frequently is required to stoop, crouch and twist. The employee is occasionally required to kneel, squat and sit.
4.      The employee must be able to consistently support, push, pull and/or lift up to 10 pounds, frequently support, push, pull and/or lift up to 30 pounds and occasionally support, push, pull and/or transfer up to 50 pounds (for example, moving a patient from a wheelchair to a bed).
5.      Functional physical demands include manual dexterity, fine motor skills and reaching. The following senses will be needed for essential duties of the job: speech, vision, hearing, and touch.
