Job Description

Overall Job Objective

General Purpose

Under the supervision of the Recreation Coordinator the Dance instructor will teach youth of various skill levels and all ages in various forms of dance.  Has the ability to choreograph dance routines and practices at the performing level.  Assists with setup, preparation and planning of dance classes.  Responsible for developing and implementing dance curriculum.  Will be able to create and maintain a safe and fun learning environment for all participants. Will follow all City and Department guidelines and policies.  

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Set up of equipment used
  • Teach dance techniques and forms to boys and girls ranging in ages three to eighteen.
  • The ability to demonstrate proper warm up and stretching techniques.
  • Ability to demonstrate dance skills.
  • The ability to instruct the curriculum of the class level you are assigned to teach.
  • Effectively develop rapport with participants and parents, and maintain safety and order in the class.
  • The ability to respond to emergency situations calmly and professionally.
  • Maintains accurate accident and incident reports.
  • The ability to recognize safety hazards and report them to supervisor.
  • The ability to assist with dance recitals and special events.
  • Provides excellent customer service, including interacting with participants and/or parents to answer questions and resolve problems.
  • Reports any issues or concerns to supervisor.
  • Substitutes for other instructors at the same level as needed.
  • The ability to take direction from and work cooperatively with the recreation coordinator and other staff.
  • The ability to attend and complete necessary trainings and meetings as they pertain to your job.
  • Must comply with City and departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience, Education, and Formal Training:

Dance Instructor II
All of above plus,

  • Ability to learn to teach intermediate level dance classes and choreography.
Dance Instructor III
All of above plus,
  • Ability to learn to teach advanced level dance classes and choreography.
Dance Instructor IV
All of above plus,
  • Ability to take on lead instructor functions and support recreation coordinator in administrative functions as they pertain to the dance program and events.
Dance Instructor II GD110
All of above, plus:
  • One year of Dance instruction experience.
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
  • The ability to teach intermediate level Dance.
  • The ability to take on leadership roles during tot, and beginning/advanced beginning level classes.
  • The ability to instruct other instructors to teach tot, beginning and advanced beginning level classes.
Dance Instructor III GD120
All of above, plus:
  • Mastery of the instruction of tot, beginning, advanced beginning, and intermediate dance class levels.
  • Two years of dance instruction experience.
  • The ability to choreograph intermediate and advanced level routines.
Dance Instructor IV GD130
All of above, plus:
  • Mastery of the instruction of tot, beginning, advanced beginning, intermediate and advanced level dance classes.
  • Two years experience instructing intermediate and advanced dance classes in recreation or a private studio, or two years as a City of Commerce City Dance Instructor III.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Knowledge of choreography of advanced class levels.
  • Ability to help coordinate dance performances and recitals from costume ordering to program order and all necessary administrative functions related to performances in support of the recreation coordinator.
