Job Description
- General Purpose
Under the supervision of the Recreation Coordinator the Gymnastics instructor will teach youth of various skill levels and all ages in tumbling and gymnastics to include floor, beam, vault, high bar, pommel horse, parallel bars, and bars. Will possess knowledge of CARA gymnastics rules and regulations and be able to follow them. Has the ability to follow class level curriculum, teach students mastery of curriculum, test students and make registration recommendations. Will be able to create and maintain a safe and fun learning environment for all participants. Will follow all City and Department guidelines and policies.
*Salary range is reflective of the various instructor levels*- Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Set up of equipment used
- Teach tumbling and/or gymnastics skills to boys and girls ranging in ages two to eighteen.
- The ability to demonstrate proper warm up and stretching techniques.
- The ability to instruct and spot all skills in the curriculum of the class level you are assigned to teach.
- Effectively develop rapport with participants and parents, and maintain safety and order in the gym.
- The ability to respond to emergency situations calmly and professionally.
- Maintains accurate accident and incident reports.
- The ability to safely adjust equipment and mats to offer a safe environment for each student.
- The ability to recognize safety hazards and report them to supervisor.
- The ability to assist with gymnastics meets and special events.
- Provides excellent customer service, including interacting with participants and/or parents to answer questions and resolve problems.
- Reports any issues or concerns to supervisor.
- Substitutes for other instructors at the same level as needed.
- The ability to take direction from and work cooperatively with the recreation coordinator and other staff.
- The ability to attend and complete necessary trainings and meetings as they pertain to your job.
- Must comply with City and departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Minimum Qualifications
Gymnastics Instructor I
- Must be highly motivated and take direction well
- Must be willing to work evenings, weekends and holidays
- Must have no physical limitations regarding the lifting of items up to 30 pounds
- Knowledge of basic gymnastics instruction.
- Ability to demonstrate gymnastics skills.
- Ability to read, interpret and apply operating policies and procedures.
All of above, plus:- Mastery of the instruction of tot, beginning and advanced beginning gymnastics class levels.
- The ability to teach intermediate level gymnastics.
- The ability to take on leadership roles during tot, and beginning/advanced beginning level classes.
- The ability to instruct other instructors to teach tot, beginning and advanced beginning level classes.
All of above, plus:- Mastery of the instruction of tot, beginning, advanced beginning, and intermediate gymnastics class levels.
- Knowledge of CARA gymnastics rules and routines.
- The ability to teach entry level CARA team practices (level 4 and 5).
All of above, plus:- Mastery of the instruction of tot, beginning, advanced beginning, intermediate gymnastics class levels and entry CARA team levels (level 4 and 5).
- Knowledge of High School gymnastics rules.
- Knowledge of choreography of gymnastics routines.
- Proficiency of advanced gymnastics spotting techniques and drills.
- Ability to lead a gymnastics team practice.
- Ability to lead the gymnastics team at a competition.
- Ability to take a leadership role in providing all necessary paperwork required for participation in the CARA gymnastics league to include waivers, collection of league fees, uniform orders, meet selections, etc.
Experience, Education and Formal Training
Gymnastics Instructor I- Must be a minimum of 16 years of age
- Must have two seasons of previous experience as a competitive gymnast.
- Past competitive experience as a gymnast.
- To have or obtain CPR, First Aid, Concussion Awareness and Universal Precautions Certifications.
- Ability to be trained to teach beginning class levels.
All of above plus,- One year of gymnastics instruction experience.
- Ability to learn to spot intermediate level gymnastics curriculum.
All of above plus,- Two years of gymnastics instruction experience.
- Must be a minimum of 17 years of age.
- Ability to learn to spot CARA Team level gymnastics curriculum.
- Ability to obtain CARA safety awareness training.
- Ability to attend CARA gymnastics spotting, drills, and routine clinics and trainings.
All of above plus,- Two years' experience coaching competitive-level gymnastics (4 and 5) in recreation or a private club, or two years as a City of Commerce City Gymnastics Instructor III.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Ability to learn advanced spotting on all apparatus for high school level gymnasts.
- Ability to become CHSSA Certified.

- Gymnastics equipment: Continuous
- Physical activities: Standing, walking, running, spotting, lifting 30 pounds, squatting, stooping, bending, stretching, kneeling, climbing, crawling, repeatedly twist the upper body, talk, hear, and see. Continuous
- Lifting: Up to 30 pounds. continuously, 50 pounds of force occasionally.
- Vision and hearing: Must be good at all times.
