Job Description

Overall Job Objective

General Purpose

Under the supervision of the Aquatic Coordinator and guidance of aquatic assistants and head guards a lifeguard is responsible for the general safety and conduct of the patrons using the pool and enforcement of the governing policies, rules, and regulations in the pool area.
 

Shifts are scheduled Monday - Friday between 5am - 5pm

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Must be able to work a variety of shifts including early mornings, weekends, midday,  and evening shifts. 
• Provides vigilant surveillance over users of a public swimming pool
• Enforces all pool rules and regulations
• Provides rescue assistance as needed
• Administers emergency care and first aid treatment as necessary
• Assists in facilitating emergency action procedures for the aquatic and facility areas
• Demonstrates safe work habits with awareness of co-worker and public safety
• Checks and cleans all aquatics areas
• Attends monthly staff trainings and meetings regularly as required
• Handles various reports and records such as chemical logs, incident reports, etc.
• Assists other aquatic staff members as needed
• Conducts classes for various age groups and ability levels including group and private swimming lessons 
• Complies with City and departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
• Provides exceptional customer service
• Participates and assists in the implementation of City-wide Special Events, i.e. Halloween, Neighborhood Outreaches, Fourth of July, etc.
• Exhibits flexibility, creativity, and efficiency in performing work assignments
• Serves the community with courteous, tactful and respectful actions toward citizens, customers, and co-workers
• Communicates clearly, honestly, and timely to supervisors and co-workers at all levels
• Works effectively in a team environment by completing assignments, adapting to changing circumstances, and respecting diversity
 
Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Must be a minimum of 16 years of age. Previous experience preferred but not required. Must possess current certifications in all or a combination of the following: Starfish Aquatic Institute – StarGuard Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR, AED or ability to obtain prior to, or within one month, of hiring.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
 

• Manages City tools, equipment, supplies, and resources for the best interest of  citizens
• Must be highly motivated and take direction well   
• Bilingual language skills are a plus but not required
• Must be willing to work evenings, weekends and holidays.
• Must possess a working knowledge of current lifeguarding techniques and procedures related to rescue of drowning swimmers.
• Must maintain working knowledge of first aid procedures common in swimming pool operations.
• Understands and responds to customer needs.
• Ability to administer first aid and CPR.
• Ability to act quickly and calmly in emergency situations making proper judgments as to the correct course of action.
• Perform general lifeguard duties and pool maintenance tasks.
• Ability to rescue swimmers in danger of drowning regardless of the situation and even if possible drowning victim resists rescue efforts.
• Ability to work hours scheduled.
• Enforce safety and health regulations.
• Ability to work well with culturally diverse people.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
• Ability to work well with varied and demanding people.
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally.
• Ability to organize tasks and working environment to maximize efficiency.
