Job Description

Overall Job Objective

General Purpose

Under the supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, Recreation Assistant, or the Recreation Supervisor, Personal Trainers are responsible for designing and implementing fitness programs that are goal-driven, safe, effective and enjoyable.  Must provide in-depth instruction on proper form and technique, fitness guidelines/recommendations, physiology and anatomy, exercise modifications, client motivation and the monitoring and communication of client progress.  Personal Trainers are responsible for supervising clients, creating a supportive exercise environment and continued development of skills and knowledge.  Must be able to work successfully in a team-oriented atmosphere, including being available to substitute and be an advocate for all Parks and Recreation programs and services.  

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates the ability to plan and implement goal driven, safe, effective and enjoyable personal training workouts that are appropriate for the fitness level and goals of clients, as well as meet industry standards.
  • Exhibits knowledge of exercise science, nutrition and wellness principles to promote fitness and educate clients about a lifetime approach. 
  • Creates a supportive environment and ensure every client has a positive and successful exercise experience.
  • Supervises clients during session and is prepared to enforce recreation center policies and respond to any emergencies.
  • Provides personalized attention and customer service to personal training clients and recreation center customers.
  • Conducts fitness assessments with clients, and continues monitoring progress on a regular basis, utilizing regular fitness assessments.
  • Communicates and responds to messages from the recreation center staff.  Attends orientations, meetings, workshops and other instructors' classes, as necessary.
  • Supports the fitness staff team by subbing and being available to assist in various capacities.
  • Obtains and updates necessary certifications.
  • Complies with City and departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.  Previous experience a plus, but not required.  Spanish/English bilingual a preferred but not required.  Must hold current CPR and AED certifications or the ability to obtain within 3 months of hire.  Ability to demonstrate competent technical personal training skills.
Personal Trainer I:
All of the above plus:

  • Nationally recognized personal trainer certification-ACSM, ACE, NASM or NSCA preferred, but others accepted as deemed appropriate
  • 1 year or less training experience
Personal Trainer II:
All of the above plus:
  • Nationally recognized personal trainer certification-ACSM, ACE, NASM or NSCA preferred, but others accepted as deemed appropriate
  • 1-5 years training experience
Personal Trainer III:
All of the above plus:
  • Nationally recognized personal trainer certification-ACSM, ACE, NASM or NSCA preferred, but others accepted as deemed appropriate
  • More than 5 years training experience AND/OR Bachelor's Degree in exercise science or related field

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must have high knowledge of exercise science, nutrition and wellness
  • Must be able to exhibit excellent technical skills to lead one on one or group personal training sessions
  • Must be highly motivated and take direction well
  • Must be able to use independent judgment while applying general organizational policies and values
  • Must be able to adapt to varied customer service, equipment and work environment situations
  • Must be willing to work a varied work schedule which may include evenings, weekends and holidays
  • Must have no physical limitations regarding the lifting of items up to 50 pounds to assist participants with gathering appropriate equipment for class participation
