HOURLY RATE: $11.50-$12.50 per hour (based on relevant experience)

Title: LIFEGUARD

Department: - Recreation - All Facilities

Summary: Performs in a lifeguard position protecting the life and well-being of each patron using the aquatic facility.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities
: The following duties and responsibilities and illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.

· Prevention of any accidents by eliminating the hazard or a hazardous behavior.

· Enforcing all rules involving pool policy and operation procedure.

· Knowledge of all rules and justification for the rules.

· Educated the swimming public to the habits and attitudes of safe recreation and encourages their cooperation.

· Maintains a level of physical fitness appropriate to the demands of life guarding required to fulfill any emergency procedure for any circumstance.

· Assists in the maintenance and care of the equipment, facilities, and environment including cleaning duties.

· Attends and participates in all required City sponsored clinics, workshops, and meetings.

· Informs the supervisor of any disciplinary problems as necessary.

· Performs any other related or similar duty as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position is not responsible for the supervision of employees.


Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the necessary functions of this position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

· Occasionally works independently without direct supervision.

· Establishes and maintains effective working relationship with co-workers, participants and the public.

· Communicates effectively in both oral and written form with external and internal customers.

· Ability to show sensitivity in dealing with all age groups, persons with disabilities, and a diverse population.

· Basic computer knowledge and ability to operate a variety of office equipment.

· Ability to understand and apply department procedures and policies.

· Ability to handle sensitive or stressful situations with tact and diplomacy.

· Ability to use table and chair dollies, kitchen equipment, carpet vacuum, standard office equipment including copiers and computers.

· The Aquatics Department has a dynamic and changing schedule. Ability to work varying shifts is desirable, particularly weekends and holiday shift availability.

Education and Experience: Minimum age is 15.

Language Skills: Ability to read instructions and communicate with City supervisor and the general public. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisor, user groups, customers, and the general public.


Reasoning Ability:
Ability to solve and implement practical solutions to problems. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Foresee and initiate proactive measures to insure program quality, customer service and safety.

Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations:

Current American Red Cross Lifeguard and First Aid Certifications required.

Physical Demands:
· Bending, stooping, pulling, pushing, jumping, twisting, balancing kneeling, crouching, reaching and climbing.

· Physical activity required in leading/demonstrating classes.

· Lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds

· Hand-eye coordination for operation of a computer keyboard.

· Ability to read written materials and to observe programs.

· Speech and hearing capabilities to maintain communications with employees and citizens.

Lifeguard Performance Steps

Step 1

· Performs as required by job description with direct supervision.

· Serves at lifeguard with punctual attendance for all scheduled shifts without incident.

· Attendants all scheduled safety trainings unless excused.

· Performs preventative maintenance as assigned and complete necessary logs.

· Accumulates a minimum of 480 hours

· Favorable review by the Aquatics Coordinator

Step 2

· Performs all of the duties outlined in Step 1.

· Initiative and ability to do work beyond what is expected.

· Willingness to work extra hours and help with special events and holidays.

· Assist in the set up and tear down of swim meets and ability to work with minimal supervision.

· Accumulates a minimum of 1040 hours

· Favorable review by the Aquatics Coordinator

Step 3

· Performs all of the duties outlined in Step 1 & 2.

· Assist Head Lifeguard in scheduling lifeguard rotations.

· Gains knowledge in maintenance of pool equipment.

· Thorough knowledge of lifesaving skills and proper scanning with the ability to demonstrate skills to others.

· Accumulates a minimum of 1500 hours

· Favorable review by the Aquatics Coordinator

Head Lifeguard Performance Steps

Step 1

· Supervises lifeguards.

· Coordinates responsibilities and takes direction from the Aquatics Coordinators.

· Assist coordinators in developing work schedules and training new employees.

· Assists in the assessment, training, and evaluation of lifeguard performance requirements.

· Organizes work groups for special events.

· Develop new ideas for pool operation efficiency.

· There are a limited number of Head Lifeguard positions and this varies from season to season

· Accumulates a minimum of 480 hours as a head lifeguard

· Favorable review and interview by the Aquatics Coordinators and Aquatics Supervisor

Step 2

· Performs all of the duties outlined in Step 1.

· Leads work groups for special events.

· Assists in hiring, training and disciplinary action of lifeguards.

· Conducts regularly scheduled Safety Trainings.

· Deals with public complaints, researches problem areas and offers suggestions for improvements.

· Exhibits a high standard of public relations through speaking with patron on the various programs offered in aquatics.

· Accumulates a minimum of 1040 hours as a head lifeguard

· Favorable review by the Aquatics Coordinator

Step 3

· Performs all of the duties outlined in Step 1 & 2.

· Accumulates a minimum of 2080 hours as a lifeguard

· Favorable review by the Aquatics Coordinator

All steps based on budget availability and current City of Fort Collins Policy

Based on previous employee experience steps can be skipped with the approval of Area Manager
