Description

The Engineering Technician assists in the planning, evaluation, design, and field
surveying in public works and utility projects.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Drafts construction plans for maintenance and capital improvement projects;
  • Assists engineers in the preparation of specifications and construction designs for capital improvement projects; prepare exhibits and reports as required;
  • Develops drawings used for construction bid processes, law enforcement court proceedings, building inspection requirements and other infrastructure matters;
  • Performs topographical and location surveys, including layout and grade staking.
  • Researches and prepares legal descriptions of rights-of-way, easements and ownership deeds;
  • Updates and maintains official city maps and drafts various maps and presentation documents for other departments;
  • Serves as the technical liaison for the Engineering Division's asset management efforts;
  • Analyzes asset life-cycle costs in coordination with the Infrastructure Asset Manager; develops performance goals, measure progress, and develop reports to track progress in asset management;
  • Assists with preparation of project bid documents and cost estimates.
  • Monitors sewer charges and tap fees; verifies sewer taps issuances by Sanitation Districts;
  • Prepares annual road report to CDOT with map exhibit and tabulation;
  • Assists Zoning Official in assigning property addresses;
  • Responds to questions and inquiries from the public;
  • Performs special research, gathers data, analyzes information and prepares reports relating to various engineering matters;
  • Prepares reports and permit applications as required;
  • Maintains the Engineering Division's paper and electronic records and historical archives, including cataloging, scanning and retention;
  • May serve as an Emergency Worker;
  • Performs other assignments and projects as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree in Civil Engineering or related field and,
  • Two (2) years' experience with AutoCad and GIS software  and,
  • Two (2) years' experience in site surveying or related experience,
  • A valid Colorado driver's license and a qualifying driver's history;
  • Requires equivalent combination of education, formal training, and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Ability to interpret construction plans and specifications;
  • Knowledge of engineering and construction principles and practices and municipal public works operations;
  •  Knowledge of the principles of land surveying, including plats and property legal descriptions;
  • Ability to use and learn various software platforms including Microsoft Office, AutoCad, GIS, and Asset Management;
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
  • Skills in the manipulation of tools, instruments, surveying equipment, and other engineering devices, requiring coordination with eyes, hands, and/or feet;
  • Ability to develop a plan for organizing multiple tasks, scheduling meetings, setting deadlines, and preparing for future events;
  • Ability to use mathematical reasoning and analytical skills and apply results is necessary to carry out assigned work and tasks.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:
  • Requires the following physical abilities to perform essential job functions: lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling objects weighing up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.
  • Requires ability to sit, stand, operate a vehicle, walk, and tolerate extreme weather conditions and temperatures.
