Job Description

Overall Job Objective


Under general supervision, assists the Southern Stars program.

Assists with planning and implementation of program curriculum.
Assists with supervision of participants.
Assists with providing age-appropriate activities.
Enforces safety standards and regulations throughout the program to ensure compliance with local, state and federal laws.
Ensures all possible safety measures are observed.
Communicates and enforces facility and program policies and procedures.
Responds to emergency situations as required and maintains accurate accident and incident reports.
Provides excellent customer service, including interacting with parents to answer questions and resolve problems.
Complies with City and departmental rules and regulations, policies, and procedures.
Reports parental issues and concerns to supervisor.
Leads and trains Youth Program Leaders.
Performs other duties as assigned.


High school diploma or GED; one year of experience working with children/teens in a supervisory role.  Must be at least 18 years of age.  Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Licensing/Certification Requirements:
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.  First Aid certification, Universal Precautions certification and Medication Administration certification or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire required for the Adventure Club position.
Valid Colorado driver's license with a safe driving record. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the City of Thornton and the department.
Knowledge of basic child care principles.
Skill in performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid and Universal Precautions activities.
Skill in the safe and healthy operations of a structured program.
Skill in maintaining a variety of records.
Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public.
Ability to effectively lead and coordinate children's activities.
Ability to read, interpret and apply operating policies and procedures.
Ability to react quickly and accurately in emergency situations.
Ability to listen well and communicate effectively with children ages 6-15 and with parents.
Ability to promote and provide a quality program.
Ability to maintain composure during mentally, physically and emotionally stressful situations.
Ability to react quickly and accurately to changing elements.

Physical and Mental Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, stand, walk, kneel, squat, stoop,  climb, crawl, repeatedly twist the upper body, talk, hear, see, demonstrate manual dexterity and perform light lifting, and is regularly required to stand and walk around for up to eight hours per day.  The employee must demonstrate the ability to remain calm during routine and stressful conditions, and may be exposed to various environmental weather conditions including being in the sun and heat for up to eight hours per day, several days each week.


Examinations may include but are not limited to application screening beyond minimum qualifications; written, oral, practical exercise or any combination thereof or other job related assessment deemed appropriate by Human Resources.
