Job Description

Overall Job Objective

SUMMARY

Under specified supervision, teaches a variety of fitness classes.
 
Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from Fitness Instructor I or, when filled from the outside, require previous and directly related experience.
 
Fitness Instructor I:
Under immediate supervision, this is the entry-level class in the Fitness Instructor series.  Incumbents entering this class have limited related work experience.
 
Fitness Instructor II:
Under general supervision, this is the intermediate-level class in the Fitness Instructor series.
 
Fitness Instructor III:
Under direction, this is the journey-level class in the Fitness Instructor series.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Assists with setup, preparation and planning of fitness classes.
 
Instructs a variety of fitness classes.
 
Ensures all possible safety measures are observed.
 
Communicates and enforces facility and class policies and procedures.
 
Responds to emergency situations as required and maintains accurate accident and incident reports.
 
Provides excellent customer service, including interacting with participants to answer questions and resolve problems.
 
Reports any issues and concerns to supervisor.
 
Demonstrates fitness to perform all activities for the duration of the class.
 
Complies with City and departmental rules and regulations, policies, and procedures.
 
Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience: 
Fitness Instructor I:
Requires six months of fitness teaching experience.  Must be at least 18 years old.  Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
 
Fitness Instructor II:
Requires one year of fitness teaching experience.  Must be at least 18 years old. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
 
Fitness Instructor III:
Requires two years of fitness teaching experience.  Must be at least 18 years old.  Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Licensing/Certification Requirements: 
Fitness Instructor I/II:
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certificates, or the ability to obtain both within 30 days of hire.
 
May need the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as the job requires.
 
Fitness Instructor III:
In addition to the above requirements:
Fitness certification from American Council of Exercise (ACE), Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) or other accredited certification program.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the City of Thornton and the department.
Knowledge of basic fitness class instruction.
Skill in performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid activities.
Skill to effectively lead and coordinate fitness classes.
Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public.
Ability to read, interpret and apply operating policies and procedures.
Ability to react quickly and accurately in emergency situations.
Ability to listen well and communicate effectively with the public.
Ability to promote and provide quality fitness classes.
Ability to maintain composure during mentally, physically and emotionally stressful situations.

Physical and Mental Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, stand, walk, kneel, squat, stoop, climb, crawl, repeatedly twist the upper body, talk, hear, see, demonstrate manual dexterity and perform light lifting.  The employee must demonstrate the ability to remain calm during routine and stressful conditions.  The employee is occasionally required to push or drag objects or equipment.
