Job Title: EXCEL! Tutoring (Writing), Hourly Staff

Department: Excel

Pay rate: $12.25-$19.15

Number of openings: 1

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Tutoring
    • Demonstrate an ability to effectively assist students in learning the concepts required for the course.
    • Greet and interact with students in a positive and helpful manner.
    • Foster a supportive learning environment, remaining composed in tense situations.
    • Be approachable, and communicate clearly, respectfully, and effectively.
    • Develop students' critical thinking skills through modeling and guided work.
    • Foster the ability for students to engage with their work independently.
    • Successfully engage one-on-one with an underrepresented student populations including students of color, first generation, students with differing levels of English fluency, different learning styles, and low income students.
    Assist students with issues related to computer based assignments and navigate computer software and websites.
    • Maintain a punctual work schedule.
    • Guide others to a better understanding of concepts and skills.

  • Professional Development & Departmental Support


• Attend professional development to improve tutoring skills.
• Attend all Excel Tutoring and Study Lab meetings.
• Attend department or center meetings as required.
• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: (required/minimum)
    • Must qualify as a faculty member under INST-17, Faculty and Instructor Qualifications, Hiring, and Evaluation in the subject area(s) of tutoring.

    Experience: (required/minimum)
    • Experience or knowledge of tutoring students in an educational setting, preferably at an institution of higher education.
    • At least two years teaching in the discipline of tutoring.
    • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.

  • Experience: (preferred)
    • Teaching experience at Community College of Denver.
    • Experience working in an urban minority-majority college.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: (required/minimum)
    • Ability to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills in order to interact with diverse constituents and to provide high quality support and high levels of customer service to students.
    • Ability to work well in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, faculty and staff.
    • Adept with use of MS Office Suite and other related/similar software.
    • Demonstrated ability to work individually and within a team.
    • Ability to remain composed under stress.
    • Proven ability to work effectively with a wide range of populations including students, staff, and faculty.

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: (preferred)


• Knowledge of a second language.
• Bilingual.

  • Licensure/Certification: N/A

    Equipment Used:


• Computers, printers, copy machines, other office equipment

  • Other Considerations: Some early morning, evening, and weekend work will be required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Teaching experience at Community College of Denver.
• Experience working in an urban minority-majority college.

Time Commitment

6-28hours a week (may not exceed 28 hours per week)
