Senior Designer, F+W Book Group

Job Summary

The Senior Designer is responsible for overall visual presentation, brand identity and execution of craft-book products for the community and its customers. This position supports the F+W Book Group’s team revenue goals and initiatives in addition to being primary liaison to the prepress/production staff insuring deadlines are maintained and achieved. The Senior Designer provides ideation and oversight of the creative process.

Essential Job Functions

Employment Responsibilities

  • Creation of print books through outlined initiatives insuring revenue goals are achieved
  • Assist in creation of digital products to include eBook design (digital downloads) and layout
  • Proactive role in all aspects of production to include; planning meetings, photo shoots, monitoring of internal schedules and deadlines
  • Execution of clear and accurate full-size pattern illustrations (as applicable)
  • Creation of any step-by-step illustrations necessary to support editorial content in print books
  • Liaise with technical editors on supplied sketches to execute final digital Illustrations
  • Proactive communications to editorial team all aspects of project schedules and completion
  • Design special projects when necessary
  • Manage freelance designers on various projects
  • Other duties and projects (including other book topics) as assigned by Executive Director


  • Two-year technical or four-year degree in graphic design or related field; previous graphic-design experience with emphasis in printing and publishing
  • Experience designing heavily illustrated books
  • Working knowledge of desktop publishing software to include; Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Acrobat Professional) special emphasis in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop with use of pattern fills
  • Strong typographic selection, color theory and page composition skills in print and e-media
  • Knowledge of Mac OS, file naming and architecture
  • Understanding of process color reproduction and print media
  • High level of initiative (self-starter), motivation and exceptional written/verbal interpersonal communication skills. Team player who works well in collaborative work environment with Executive Director and editorial staff
  • Ability to work well under pressure and multiple deadlines
  • Possess a high level of attention to detail
