We evaluate and treat heart problems such as coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart valve problems and heart failure.
As one of the country's premier respiratory institutions, we also specialize in heart diseases related to lung disease such as pulmonary hypertension, cardiac sarcoidosis and other more rare diseases. We also specialize in the evaluation of patients with shortness of breath with exercise, preventive cardiology, exercise physiology, and are expert in the use of nutrition to improve and reduce cardiovascular risk.

This position is 24 hours per week. We are looking for coverage on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
General Summary
Independently plans and provides general nursing care for patients and families in the ambulatory outpatient care setting utilizing a systematic approach incorporating assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Practices in accordance with physician orders, established policies and procedures, and the values stated in the National Jewish Health and the Department of Nursing vision and mission. Provides nursing services within the scope of the RN as defined by the Colorado Board of Nursing. Participates in orientation of new staff.
Essential Responsibilities
  1. Perform the following basic competencies: Provision of age-specific care, completion of general nursing competencies through the annual skills review, and any unit-specific competencies (if applicable, see addendum)
  2. Utilizes the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation) incorporating interdisciplinary needs, patient/family goals, and cultural/spiritual beliefs.
  3. Develops and documents a plan of care in collaboration with patient, family and other health team members identifying actual and potential patient care needs. Updates to plan of care are documented approved format.
  4. Performs procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatments to patients in accordance with National Jewish Health Policies and Procedures
  5. Accurately documents nursing activity and the patient's response to nursing intervention using approved format.
  6. Formulates, documents, and updates an individual teaching plan including but not limited to disease process and appropriate use of medications. Demonstrates effective patient teaching skills using one-on-one interventions and written National Jewish Health supportive material.
  7. Implements care and services that recognize age-specific needs and concerns for patients and their families
  8. Manages a typical patient assignment, setting priorities, organizing activities, and utilizing available resources. Anticipates, initiates, and coordinates prescriptions/orders/referrals.
  9. Integrates, prioritizes and acts upon simultaneous sources of information requiring the attention of the professional nurse.
  10. Manages telephone communications including: assessing patient needs over the phone; providing appropriate advice; directing patient to appropriate level of care; communicating status to physician; addressing prescription requests; documenting actions in approved format.
  11. Demonstrates commitment to patient safety. Assesses variances and communicates through appropriate channels. Activates and responds appropriately to emergency situations according to established policies and procedures.
  12. Communicates in a constructive and positive manner. Uses effective listening skills and supportive verbal and non-verbal communications that convey respect and understanding.
  13. Addresses conflict directly with the individuals involved in a manner that contributes to effective resolution for all involved.
  14. Demonstrates patient/family advocacy. Includes them as members of the health care team in identifying care needs and determining actions for resolution.
  15. Demonstrates professionalism as evidenced by positive problem solving, utilization of available resources and respecting/acknowledging team effort. Assumes Charge nurse responsibilities ( if applicable to specific unit)
  16. Adjusts effectively to changes in priorities and circumstances. Generates feasible ideas and solutions for improvement.
  17. Demonstrates knowledge of and supports changes in practice and initiatives of National Jewish Health implemented to improve quality of care.
  18. Participates in the development of unit standards, policy and procedures.
  19. Maintains attendance per policy while minimizing overtime. Utilizes work time efficiently to contribute to the department's productivity.
  20. Supports financial initiatives of the institution, department, and unit.
  21. Participates in own professional development' Identifies learning needs and seeks appropriate assistance and educational offerings. Willingly and effectively uses input from others for individual growth.
  22. Assists others in developing their skills, knowledge and abilities. Serves as a preceptor for new staff during orientation and continues as a role model, mentor and resource to all staff in the institution
  23. Shares knowledge and skills by presenting unit based or departmental educational offerings yearly. This may include but is not limited to live presentations, posters, literature reviews and patient education material
  24. Is knowledgeable of and participates in research activities in the institution.
Knowledge and Skills
Incumbent must have exceptional oral and written communication skills; attention to detail and ability to multi-task; and possess strong organizational skills. Capacity to establish and maintain positive relationships with internal and external customers while maintaining confidentiality. Incumbent must be a positive, professional team player. Must be knowledgeable in the scope of practice of the Registered Nurse, Certified Nursing Assistant, and Medical Assistant. Must apply appropriate application of the nursing process, professional theory and practice. Must have the ability to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively. Must possess the ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, members of the healthcare team, and administration. Incumbent must possess effective computer skills and the ability to use multiple software applications. Must demonstrate the ability to perform basic life support skills in an emergency.
Graduation from an Accredited School of Nursing is required. BSN is preferred.
Current Colorado RN License and current CPR/BLS certification (ACLS or PALS if applicable for specific unit) is required.
Work Experience
A minimum of two (2) years of recent and related RN experience is required. Different patient care areas may require additional experience.
