Fleet Operations Supervisor
Responsible for supervision, management and long-range planning for Equipment Operations including all road conditions around station, blasting operations, explosive assets, crane operations and assisting with traverse preparations within a 75 mile radius of McMurdo Station. Responsibilities also include planning and coordination for construction and maintenance of multiple snow or ice runways and roads, design, coordination, construction and maintenance of the Ice Pier and Bailey Bridge, and construction and maintenance of all McMurdo infrastructure. Responsible for assisting with the planning, coordination and construction of Project work in and around McMurdo, which includes work to construct several new facilities in McMurdo over the coming 7-10 years. Supervises approximately ten people directly and approximately twenty personnel indirectly, operating day and night shifts seven days per week at multiple and remote locations. Deploys to Antarctica for approximately six months each year.
GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive):
- Responsible for implementing and maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.
- Ensures that all subordinate employees are trained, understand and comply with ASC and NSF Environmental Health & Safety, and quality assurance requirements and goals. Maintains documentation as necessary to meet these requirements.
- Interfaces with NSF, other contractor and ASC personnel as necessary to coordinate equipment support, operational activities and to provide information.
- Plans, establishes goals, prioritizes and schedules work center tasks and work assignments. Receives requests and schedules personnel and assets to meet user and planned requirements.
- Develops training plans, safety programs and procedures. Reviews plans and procedures annually and submits amendments for approval. Ensures all personnel are trained to safely perform their assigned tasks.
- Ensures operators inspect equipment and lifting fixtures in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and established procedures. Ensures operators perform daily maintenance in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and established procedures. Responsible for keeping records of daily inspections.
- Coordinates with the VMF and McMurdo Operations manager to plan equipment maintenance support for heavy equipment and cranes.
- Generates input for the Equipment Replacement Plan regarding equipment demands and vehicle applicability or condition.
- Develops and maintains inventory control systems for materials, tools and assets. Maintains accurate inventory and assures adequate materials are on hand for planned work.
- Prepares and maintains labor and equipment use reports on a daily basis.
- Prepares and submits input for consideration in annual labor and material budgets for the equipment operations work center, including special projects as requested.
- Works closely with ASC Science Support personnel to evaluate and determine the supportability of proposed scientific projects given existing equipment and known environmental and operational constraints.
- Manages and schedules operation of all equipment and vehicles assigned to the department.
- Works closely with PAE recruiters to screen and hire quality personnel.
- Performs studies in support of Operations Division metrics.
- Trains and orients subordinate employees on performance, documentation and activities that affect the achievement Operations Division metrics.
- Tracks data related to metrics.
- Supports the achievement of ASC metrics, whether metrics can be directly or indirectly, effected by this position's activities.
- Provides direct support, using staff resources if necessary, to the achievement of all metrics related to ASC.
- Provides support to South Pole and Inland camps with labor and equipment as requested.
- Communicates professionally, both orally and in writing, with subordinates as needed to relay information. This includes, but is not limited to, staff meetings, performance appraisals, job requirements, division metrics, projects, Quality Standard Procedures, and safety practices.
- Physical activities to involve lifting up to the safety regulation maximum, working both indoors and outdoors.
- Handles confidential matters (personnel actions, management reports, etc.) in accordance with management policy.
- Performs other duties as required.
- Four year degree from a certified college or university preferred. Equivalent experience accepted in lieu of a degree.
- Valid Driver's license required.
- A minimum of five years’ experience in equipment operation and maintenance with at least four years’ experience at the supervisory level is required.
- Heavy highway construction and/or mining construction experience preferred.
- Career record must include the demonstrated ability to manage a multi-skilled work force.
- Must have excellent verbal and written skills and proficient computer skills.
- Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.
- Must be able to read and interpret construction blue prints.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office required.
- General knowledge and understanding of project schedules preferred.
- Prior project management experience preferred.
- Prior cold-climate equipment operations preferred.
- Snow grooming, moving experience preferred.
- Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.
- Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including occasional heavy lifting, frequent climbing in and out of equipment, infrequent crawling, and working outdoors in a harsh environment.
- Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.
- Must participate in community programs, such as station chores, cleaning up around the station, recycling efforts and safety objectives.
- US citizenship or Permanent US Resident status is required.
