You will be comfortable advocating change to senior executives and have a track record of changing the working practices of technology operations teams. We expect this leader to be a  self-starter and one who drives change and builds excitement.
This role will be responsible for leading a team who are delivering the next-generation technology platform to our global community. Pearson is making the transformation to the cloud native applications and services. In order to do this, we need to have a platform and support function suitable for these cloud architectures. You will be expected to challenge your team to think about solutions differently and have a deep appreciation of user experience.
As a leader at Pearson, you will be seen as an expert in your field but will understand that your primary role is to enable the engineers in your team to shine and deliver to their full potential. The teams you will lead are: Cloud Operations, DevOps, Platform Ops, and Cloud Networking.

Summary of role:

Senior Director of Cloud Operations will lead the global cloud operations. This role will design, deploy, support, and evolve Cloud Services and Hosting Operations across a global portfolio of 3,000 applications. You will be responsible for implementing service catalogs, SLA's, KPI's, goals & objectives supporting on-going operations for private data centers, hybrid-cloud environments, and public cloud. You will be supporting the DevOps transformation on a global basis.

Main activities/responsibilities:

This role is a pivotal role as a member of our Cloud Operations team. This particular role has several varied requirements and needs a number of essential personal characteristics, skills and competencies.

  • This role is influential and part of global cloud operations enabling Pearson on their cloud journey with an on-prem/hybrid and public cloud strategy.

  • Manage full cloud service lifecycle from the release of cloud service offerings into production through the retirement thereof.

  • Build and maintain cloud operations tools for monitoring, notifications, trending, and analysis.

  • Work closely with architecture, security and engineering teams to specify and document solutions and practices.


  • 5-7 years production experience with either AWS, Azure or OCI cloud platforms.

  • Familiarity with core provider services from AWS, OCI, Azure or GCP, preferably having supported deployments on one or more of these platforms; professional level certifications desired.

  • A deep understanding of distributed system design, network architecture and dependency management. You will understand how teams need to work to manage the inherent complexity.

  • Strong infrastructure architectural knowledge.

  • Must have experience designing and supporting a global WAN, SDWAN, CDN.

  • Good understanding of modern, cloud-centric architectures and DevOps principles.

  • Solid experience with AWS Cloudformation, Ansible, Puppet or Terraform.

  • Highly motivated, goal driven, innovative, curious and open minded, fun to work with, team player.

  • Experience managing and developing remote teams and workers, can demonstrate the specialist leadership traits that enable world class remote teams to thrive ideally globally but at least domestically.

  • You can build business cases and work with vendors to own commercial relationships internally and externally to ensure we are investing in the right areas and getting the best deal for Pearson at all times.

  • Excellent collaboration skills and a passion for problem-solving.

  • Proven solution leadership skills - track record in successfully leading technical teams and driving initiatives.

  • Mentoring, coaching and task management.

  • Experience of hiring, appraising and motivating staff and managing complex resource scheduling.

  • Drive accountability and end to end ownership in the team by providing an example to others.

  • Demonstrate a detailed understanding of the criticality of operations as an enabler for growth and the role of the leader in that environment.

  • Qualified with 5-7 years experience in a Director or Sr Director position.

  • Experience working in a multinational matrix organization.
