Phishing is an attempt to obtain financial or other confidential information from Internet users, typically by sending an email that looks as if it is from a legitimate organization but contains a link to a fake website that looks very similar to a real one. These scams can be highly sophisticated in their ways of appearing like a legitimate organization and obtaining your information.

Simple Ways to Protect Yourself:
- Never reply to an email, text message or pop-up message that asks for your personal or financial information, even if it seems as though it is from an organization you know and trust.
- Never email personal or financial information, email is not a secure method of transmitting sensitive information.
- Remember that legitimate businesses will not ask you to reveal login or sensitive information via email/text.
What Might a Phishing Message Look Like?
- "During our regular verification of accounts, we couldn't verify your information. Please click here to update and verify your information."
- Messages may threaten to close your account if you do not respond. They may also contain other upsetting or exciting information to persuade you to submit your information.
- Usually, these messages aren’t personalized and are directed at, “Client,” “Customer,” “Member,” etc.
In these scenarios, fraudulent entities are attempting to steal your personal information for illegal activity by pretending to be an organization you trust and that has access to your personal information.
What To Do If You Believe You Are Being “Phished”
- DO NOT reply, call, text or click on any information in the email.
- Delete any messages that ask you to confirm or provide personal information (Credit card numbers, bank information, social security number, passwords, etc.)
- Immediately call the institution that is supposedly attempting to contact you, you can find their phone numbers of the back of your credit card, official statements, or by visiting their website directly (not via link). Explain to them the communication you received and they will confirm or deny its legitimacy.
- If you accidentally clicked a link or submitted information, call the institution immediately to inform them of fraud, reset your online password and login information.
Report Phishing:
You can easily report a phishing by contacting the following:
- Forward phishing emails to spam@uce.gov and to the bank or company being impersonated in the email.
- You may also report a phishing email to reportphishing@antiphishing.org The Anti-Phishing Working Group is a group of ISPs, security vendors, financial institutions and law enforcement agencies that use these reports to combat phishing.
- File a report with the FTC at www.ftc.gov/complaint
