Job Description

The Snowmaking Manager for Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp must have at least 3 years experience in Snowmaking, high mechanical aptitude, 3 years of strong leadership experience, a high level of ski/ride ability, and a valid Driver’s License. A resume is required for the position.

Detailed job description, including responsibilities, work performed, tools or equipment used, etc.:
• Direct and supervise snowmaking field operations. This includes making decisions in the field concerning how to proceed in the face of changing conditions as they may impact the current plan of operation
• Act as primary supervisor for snowmaking forepersons, snowmaking systems engineer and snowmaking technician. Instruct, direct, assist, and consult with them with the goal of helping them to successfully supervise and manage their crews and complete their assignments in a safe, effective, and efficient manner
• Meet with appropriate parties, brief them on current status of operations and any situations that might effect operations. Assist in planning snowmaking field operations.
• Monitor weather forecasts and conditions and make decisions based thereon as to where and when to commence or cease snowmaking operations.
• Prepare, update, and manage Snowmaking Task Sheet.
• Meet, brief and de-brief snowmaking crews at shift change.
• Insure that snowmaking facilities are kept in a clean, organized and functional condition.
• Supervise, assist, and monitor snowmaking forepersons in holding regular training and safety meetings with their crews. Insure that an accurate historical record is kept reflecting the subjects of and participants in all such meetings.
• Work with forepersons to insure that snowmaker equipment is assigned to snowmaking personnel and that a record of such assignment is taken and kept. Likewise, insure that such equipment is returned and accounted for at the end of the snowmaking season.
• Train and instruct snowmaking personnel in operational and safety matters.
• Attend and conduct weekly snowmaking forepersons meeting with the objective of resolving conflicts and improving communications between shifts.
• Advocate for snowmaking personnel. Advise superiors of any situations or conditions that might have an effect on the safety, efficiency, or moral of snowmaking employees. Suggest plans and actions to maximize these conditions.
• Process and manage any documents that may be necessary from time to time. These include but are not limited to; Incident and Accident reports, Disciplinary reports, Snowmobile and Snow Cat workorders, and Safety Suggestions.
• Take the lead role in interviewing and hiring of snowmaking personnel.
• Work with Snowmaking Forepersons to assign and schedule personnel to the various snowmaking shifts.
• Plan and prepare the annual snowmaking orientation and direct all aspects of its presentation.
• Take primary responsibility for interviewing, hiring, and training of Snowmaking Controllers and participate with the Snowmaking Forepersons in the Controllers’ periodic and end-of-season evaluations.
• Assist, at the request and direction of the Director of Slope Maintenance or other authorized persons, and as practical and feasible, with such Mountain Operations tasks as may be necessary.
• Take primary responsibility for the maintenance and repair of certain Snowmaking equipment, as agreed upon with the Snowmaking Systems Engineer, such as block houses, hose, hydrants, and land and tower guns. Work with and supervise the Snowmaking Systems Technician in these activities.
• The Director or Slope maintenance must approve all decisions that would significantly impact the scope, timing, purpose, cost or completion of any work or assignment.
• Ensure understanding and compliance with all company policies and procedures as well as any regulatory requirements
• Other duties, as assigned

Minimum skills, experience, education and ability required for this job:
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Three years of snowmaking experience
• Three years of experience in managing personnel in a fast passed, task orientated atmosphere.
• Snowmaking management greatly preferred.
• One or more years of experience in mechanical equipment maintenance and repair where troubleshooting is a primary aspect of the job.
• Operate snowmaking equipment, snowmobiles, and snow cats, and other equipment as necessary in support of snowmaking and mountain operations.
• Ensure understanding and compliance with all company policies and procedures as well as any regulatory requirements
• Operating a vehicle is an essential function of this position and will require the successful applicant to meet the minimum requirements of the Alterra Driver’s Standards Policy that includes possessing a valid Driver's License and meet insurability standards.
• Problem-solve in a highly effective manner and maintain positive relationships with guests and staff, including management, subordindates and co-workers

Physical Requirements:
• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Must be able to routinely lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
• Must be proficient in speaking, reading, and writing the English language.
• During the snowmaking season the work will frequently be strenuous. Snowmobile riding, skiing, moving guns, etc., all involve continual exertion and considerable physical effort.
• Position requires snowmobile riding and skiing over uneven ground in difficult conditions
• Exposure to high voltage electrical circuits.

Miscellaneous information:
• This is a salary exempt position and is not subject to overtime pay
• Must be able to be on-call holidays, evenings, and weekends, in addition to regular on-call hours
